Dishwasher not filling with water or washing correctly. How service the appliance.

When your dishwasher doesn't clean well or fill with water, why not fix it yourself following these simple steps in the video and avoid the expensive call out charges of an engineer. A simple service of your dishwasher and cleaning of the parts often solves the problem.

Dishwasher not filling with water

Insufficient water in the dishwasher can cause poor cleaning. If the floats get stuck in the raised position or the pressure bowls or pipes get blocked with slim, the dishwasher won’t fill with water. Another likely cause is a clogged inlet screen or faulty inlet valve

1 - Remove the spray arm and clean out the holes using a paper clip as a hook it is the best tool for the job. Spray arms like this one you unscrew a cap on top. Others require you to pull them off.

2 - Remove the filter for cleaning.3 You should be able to see the dishwasher main tank pressure bowl this will need to be removed then cleaned see video on this.

3 - The base plate or sometimes known as a kick strip will need to be removed followed by the cover plate behind.

4 - Next you will need to remove the side panel to gain access to the water flow system it is the one on the right on this machine.

5 - You will now see the dishwasher filling pressure bowl this will need to be cleaned.

6 - All the pipes that go to the main pressure switch will need to be checked for blockages. By blowing into the pipes you should here the pressure switch click, this tells you that the switch should be working correctly.

7 - Once you have cleaned everything and replaced them try the dishwasher again if it works great you have not need to buy a new valve.

8 - If the dishwasher still does not fill you will have to try replacing the main water valve see other tutorials on this.

hi, funny problem with my dishwasher that it stops after few minutes sending error message:”the appliance does not fill with water “. after opening the door it is filled up with water…

at the beginning of the washing program I can hear strange noise probably from the main pump. I reckon it fills with water properly but once the washing program comes to stage of pumping water to the shower heads the program fails and comes back with the error message above.
any help/idea/advice is more than welcome!
    PS:
I have tested the drain pump and it works ok.

    • i will need make and model please

i have the same problem with my siemens se24m851gb. I cleaned out the filters, water supply hose filters – all the things they advice you to do for fault finding including cleaning out the pump cover by removing the screws etc as you show in one of your videos. I just wonder which instructions to follow at this stage as it sounds as if the machine just over an dover repeats the pattern of trying to check if it needs to take on more water and then tries to pump. I hope you can advise me as to what to do next.
Many thanks for all the great advice you give!

    Hi
    Great videos.

We have a built in Neff Dishwasher that fills, empties, heats but doesn’t wash properly. No label is visible on machine for model number, and no model number on booklet that came with it. All I know is that it’s a pre 1999 model.

The clips that hold the select button block in place have broken so I cannot see if there is an error message as the block is down in the facia hole. However we can see when the machine has finished washing and which temperature button is pressed. The door has a facia door on the front, could this be covering the display window?

I’ve checked the filters, removed the screw that’s in the cover under the filter where there is a small ‘propellor’ under this. I’ve turned this propellor by hand. It’s not moving loosely, but does rotate.

I’ve reset the dishwasher, and where before we didn’t get hot water, the water is now heating up.

On opening the door (done several times to see if the arms have alternated in spraying), I can see the lower arm spinning but the water is not jetting out but rather pouring out of the holes. The top arm has not moved or produced water. I’ve checked holes for blockages and all seem clear.

Any ideas on what else I can check before removing it as its integrated?

    Thanks

    Mark

    • this sounds like the impeller blade on the motor bu i will need the model number it may be etched into stainless on top of door

        Hi Paul
Thanks for reply, have been on shift work, so only just seen it. Sorry for late acknowledgement.

        Model no. S553X2GB/46

To summarise so far: it draws and heats water. Dispenses the washing tablet, but doesn’t put any water into spray arms.

Today I’ve taken the sides off: (facing the machine from the front) on the right hand side is (I presume) the inlet water pipe to feed the washer arms. No water seems to be getting to this pipe.

There is a small motor unit (pump?) this side and that is spinning, no burning smells or smoke. All wiring is intact, clean and in good condition.

On the left of the machine is the inlet and waste water pipes. Water is getting to the large plastic chamber and pipes are clean. The only major muck I can see is in the chamber at the top near what appears to be an over flow exit point.

To the bottom right of the large water chamber (sorry don’t know the proper name of it) is another plastic unit that it feeds into. Inside the smaller unit is a yellow chamber and on top a blue lever/clip that activates a switch on a electrical sensor. There is a ‘tide mark’ but no major muck in this area. Also in here there is a red float attached to a float arm, lifting this up, I can drain the water out of the larger water chamber.

        Hope this helps

        Kind regards

        Mark

Don’t waste too much time thinking this over. I’ve chatted with the missus, and considering its age and that its likely to be beyond my DIY capabilities, we may consider buying a new one that will be installed for us. Had it been something fixable from the side of the machine then I would’ve attempted it.

          Regards

    Hi,

I have a Bosch Exxcel dishwasher, about 6 years old. I have an error regarding the heating of the hot water. I do not want to pay to have it fixed (around £215 from Bosch) and have sold my house so don’t really want to replace it. If I connect it to the hot water instead, will it still wash my dishes? The program seems to run fine, just errors at the end and has cold water in instead.

    Thanks

My 9 year old Asko was continually “pumping out” and expected cost to repair was $150 plus. I followed your method and simply rocked the machine forward and backwards to drain the water from the bottom and voila. Now all is well. Thank you for a fine job instruction. Have a beer on me.

Silly silly me put washing up liquid in it so I have dried all the bottom out and checked for water near the float but still no joy, it empties fine but stop when it gets to the fill part of the cycle. It doesn’t display any error codes. Please help me thank you

    Hi ,

I have a Neff FD8807 dishwasher. it is about 4 years old. The water pressure in the disk washer appears to be poor. The top spray arm turns very slow. The dishes are not washing properly.
What could the problem be with the dishwasher.

    Regards,

    Ronan

    Hi Paul,

In addition to the above the amount of water coming into the dishwasher is very small. If I pour water into it it appears to work fine.
I can also hear a lot of gurgling noises and pulsing sounds.

Hi, I’ve been experiencing a fault with my Zanussi dishwasher (ZD699 ALU). Initially started showing a (tap) fault towards the end of the wash cycle and then if you try to run again fails to fill with water? Finally after checking all the pipes, filters etc concluded the solenoid valve was at fault and thanks to your tutorials was able to replace this.
Although it did work again for a few days it is back to the same fault as before. Today it failed to fill automatically with water but did work if I manually put some water in the bottom if the machine, only to stop 28 mins before the end of the cycle, again with the same error?
This has been an excellent dishwasher and ideally I’d like to fix the fault myself; have you any further advice what may be at fault?
    Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks for your reply Paul and your recommendation to replace the water valve; as I said in my original post I have already done this. Good news the dishwasher worked all week until yesterday when same old problem occurs fails part way through a cycle and since then I’ve been unable to get it to fill with water??
Any further tips on what the fault may be would extremely appreciated!!

    Hi I have a smeg snz693is
    Error code e3.
However it fills and obviously heats as the water at the bottom of the dishwasher is hot. It drains as the water pumps away. But it will not wash. I can hear the arms going around but nothing happens. I’ve cleaned the filters and checked the arms for obstructions. I can even hear the detergent basket opening but no…..wash

Hi, Ive got a 9 ish year old Neff dishwasher. It was repaired a couple of months ago as it wasn’t cleaning properly. This was just due to a build up of gunk over the years. It was working perfectly up until today when I realised that it had run through a whole cycle (even spitting out the tablet into the machine) but no water had entered the machine. Any ideas?

I have a Beko DFN1501 which won’t heat up the water – where is the thermistor located?
I have located the water heating element but not sure how to test this?
Would both elements need changing or just one?

    Hello,

I have had a SHE55P05UC/64 dishwasher for a couple of years now and had been very happy with it, until recently when it has started not taking in sufficient water for some reason. We have fully tested the hotwater intake assembly and pressure, and all is fine right up to the dishwasher intake. When the dishwasher runs, there seems to be inadequate water, and as a result, particularly inadequate pressure/coverage for the top rack, so the dishes are not getting cleaned as well, specially in the top rack. Adding a couple of cups of water to the after each drain and refill cycle completely resolves the issue, so we just need to figure out why the machine is not taking in a bit more water as it should. Wondered if you might have some advice/guidance regarding how to fix this issue. Thank you!

hi, have got a 9 year old siemens SE25M275 GB/41. no longer washing well and it seems like the upper arm does not rotate (it’s always in whatever position its left in when closing the door) although water does appear to come out of it; but perhaps with very little oomph.
have cleaned out both upper and lower arms and connecting pieces, filter and twiddled the impeller. impeller turns ok and has a soft thunk each revolution (is that some kind of safety clutch?). it seems to empty ok, i.e. to about halfway up the cylindrical plastic filter. filled it with water as per one of your (b.t.w. excellent) vids. still misbehaving. do you think its more likely a water supply valve issue or the impeller pump unit? thanks in advance for any tips.

The dishwasher runs through all the cycles, but will not pull water from the source. All valves are open and working fine. I even run hot water before starting machine, but to no avail. Any idea what may be problem.

Our Bosch dishwasher was working fine until the water in our subdivision was turned off to fix a leak. After it was turned on, we had air in the lines of every faucet in the house. After this, our dishwasher will try to drain continuously but not fill with water. If I manually fill it with water, the cycle will run and act normal until it’s time for the next cycle to run. Any ideas on how to fix this for good?
