My Hoover VHC 691B tumble dryer stopped working, it was totally dead, with no functionality or lights working. Checking the circuit board I could see the chip had broken apart (I’m guessing it overheated and exploded because the water tray and fluff tray were both full), so I replaced the circuit board. However when I then tested it the tumble dryer stopped and beeped when I put it on a sensor programme and if I tried it on a timed programme it went straight to the spin cycle bypassing the heat part of the programme (the heat light didn’t light up and the spin one did). I ended up buying a new heater complete with new thermostats however the tumble dryer is still showing the same symptoms. What else could the fault be? I was thinking maybe the NTC sensor is broken however I’ve tested it with a multimeter and it’s showing an Ohms reading on the 200k and 2M setting but nothing on the lower Ohms settings. I can’t seem to locate any other thermostats in the tumble dryer apart from the two on the heater that were replaced with the heater. I also can’t locate a thermal cut out switch, to see if this needs resetting. Many thanks.Chris

I will try and help with this problem about Hoover VHC 691B 80 Tumble Dryer,

Hi Chris, sorry to hear about the problem with your tumble dryer. I’ve got some limited information for you, but the wiring diagram and the exploded diagram of the machine should help a lot.

Firstly, you mentioned you’ve replaced the circuit board because all the lights were dead, but now it’s not working correctly. I need to ask if you bought a new circuit board programmed for your machine or a second-hand one, or possibly an unprogrammed board. Both of these could be causing your problem. Circuit boards need to be programmed specifically for your model. You can’t just replace a circuit board unless it states it is programmed for your model. If it is a new circuit board, I’m not sure what the issue could be.

The exploded diagrams below will show you where everything is on the machine. The wiring diagram will show that there is a thermal cut-out on top of the heater and another sensor. There are also a few other sensors attached to the machine, and you’ll need to look closely at their layout. It’s also possible that you may have bad connections on the circuit board. You didn’t fully explain the problem, but do check all the connections on the circuit board and ensure all plugs are connected correctly.

It’s hard for me to help with this type of fault without having the machine in front of me. Often, it’s the simplest problems that are overlooked. The manufacturer doesn’t provide me with the ohms reading for the NTC sensor, but I have some videos on my YouTube channel showing how to test NTC sensors. They should all have roughly similar values when testing. The most important thing is that the value changes as you heat or cool the NTC sensor.

I’m currently not in the UK; I’ve been away at the IFA Berlin trade show and travelling for a couple of weeks. At the moment, I’m in Northern Holland near the Western Frisian Islands but will be back in the office late next week. If you’re still stuck, feel free to contact us then.

I’ve also added a link at the top of the page to the full model number I think you have. When you sent the email, you just mentioned a Hoover VHC 691B but didn’t include the numbers that follow. It’s important to order parts using the complete model number. I’ve provided a link above, but please make sure it matches yours
