Hotpoint LST216A Dishwasher Not Working

I have a Hotpoint LST216A Dishwasher. Tried to run on various cycles and it is not washing.Cleaned filters/arms etc. weren’t clogged.Fills with water, heats, drains, but not washing, making strange hissing sound when in cycle not usual wash sound.Hasn’t been used for over a year

Hi Sarah, sorry to hear about the problem with your Hotpoint dishwasher. If the machine hasn’t been used for over a year, the main motor might be the issue. If your machine fills with water, heats up, but the spray arms don’t turn and you hear a strange noise, the motor may be jammed.

On these Hotpoint dishwashers, look carefully at the back of the main motor. Sometimes there’s a screw in the back of the armature. With the power off, you can put a large screwdriver in this and try to turn the motor. When a machine isn’t used for a long time, water can seep into the bearing on the motor through the pump seal. This causes corrosion and can make it seize. The capacitor and motor windings aren’t strong enough to turn it over when this happens.

In the worst case, you might need to replace the motor. But you might get lucky and free up the motor by turning it with a screwdriver by hand for a bit. This could allow the bearings to rotate and get your machine working again.

Good luck with your repair. I’ve included exploded diagrams below showing each component. Number 27 in the diagram is the main motor I’m talking about, not number 16. Number 16 is the pump motor that empties water from the machine; number 27 is the main motor.

If there’s no screw on this, then you’ll need to replace the motor. There’s a link at the top of the page to all spare parts for your machine. You’ll need the full model number from your identification plate since there are over 14 variations of this machine.
