Hi – I’ve watched a few of your super helpful videos to dismantle our Samsung WW85J54E0IW washing machine and remove the door rubber which was sticking in one spot to the stainless steel drum and partially melting. Having got the rubber seal off, I note the the drum does spin perfectly aligned within the plastic housing. It appears to be offset when I rotate the drum by hand.Is that a problem that simply replacing the door seal (and cleaning the drum edges/lip) won’t fix, or should the drum spin slightly untrue.Hope you can help and many thanks

I will try and help with this problem about Samsung WW85J54E0IW Washing Machine,

Hi Greg, I’m glad to hear that you found the videos helpful and sorry to hear about the trouble with your Samsung WW85J54E0IW washing machine. It could be one of three issues. Let me explain.

Firstly, the drum might have warped due to an imbalanced load. This happens when there’s too much weight on one side, permanently changing the drum’s shape.

Secondly, the drum bearings might be worn out, causing the drum to drop and rub at the bottom. You would hear a loud rumbling noise when the bearings spin at high speeds if they are worn.

The major problem could be a hairline fracture in the aluminium spider that attaches to the drum. This isn’t always visible until the machine spins at high RPM with 5-6 kilos of clothing inside. When this happens, you’ll notice wobbling and rubbing against the door seal, along with a burning smell and increased noise.

It’s puzzling why Samsung doesn’t use higher quality aluminium since this seems to be a common issue worldwide. Many people report that the spider collapses after 7-8 years. Factors like iron and calcium in the water and electrolysis can affect this because aluminium is weak on the galvanic scale.

I wouldn’t replace the door seal until you’re sure the spider is in good condition. The only way to check is by completely stripping down the machine and removing the inner drum from the outer drum. With my 40 years of experience, I suspect a hairline fracture in the aluminium spider is causing your problem.

If you need parts for your machine, use your model number to find them via the link above or in the sidebar. You can get a new spider and bearings if you decide to do the work yourself, which should take about 3-4 hours. You can also pick up a new door seal at that time.

I hope this helps you. I’ve included some relevant videos on common faults with Samsung washing machines.

Best wishes,
Paul
