1. Siemens WT46W566GB/03 condenser tumble dryer is over 10 years old — but can’t be exact. I’ve looked after it carefully, i.e. emptied the fluff filter each cycle (although a replacement lint catcher, from Germany and supposedly for this model, didn’t ever seem to be right).2. Suspicious it wasn’t drying fully — local repair shop (who didn’t come out) suggested the condenser was dirty and had I cleaned it?3. Realised it’s “self-cleaning”!, so checked out some videos and we accessed the condenser (had to cut out the access rectangle) and bought a maintenance flap to cover it up afterwards.4. Cleaned out the fins at the front, but difficult, and actually they didn’t seem too bad.5. Found a video about a self-cleaning cycle by accessing the service menu (something like P:07), so did this too. A couple of times.6. After this the machine seemed to work but then switched off after about 2 minutes.7. Somewhere around this time we found your site. On the back of this, we checked the circuit board. All seemed fine.8. We decided it wasn’t going to beat us and it was stripped down over about 2 weeks until basically we cleaned up the whole thing. There was water at the bottom, mixed with fluff, which was all cleaned up and dried.9. We checked the pump and hoses, which seemed fine.10. All put back together. And it switched on but the On/Off button didn’t respond AND we also had the dial incorrectly lined up so the programmes didn’t match the times that came up. So took the circuit board out again to line up the dial. However, when it was being screwed back in there was a wisp of smoke. On inspection, it had cracked a resistor in half. 11. So that’s where we are. I’m in Wales (as are you?) and don’t want to be without a drier. Should we persist (i.e. get the resistor fixed and what else to check), or is this a lost cause? (which is what my local repair shop said in a second conversation — ditch it and get a cheap Beko was their advice).Grateful for any direction on this as we’re whole-heartedly with you — nothing lasts and repair shops are too quickly defeated in our opinion.Cheers, Kate and Chris (Swansea)

I will try and help with this problem about Siemens WT46W566GB/03 Condenser Tumble Dryer,

Hi Kate and Chris,

Thank you very much for the detailed list of things you have checked on your Siemens WT46W566GB/03 condenser heat pump tumble dryer. It’s nice to see someone fill out our contact page correctly and provide as much information as possible.

Firstly, even though the machine is old, it’s often worth repairing if you have the time. These Siemens heat pump tumble dryers are high-end and well-built. However, I’m not a fan of heat pump tumble dryers because fluff tends to build up on the condenser and evaporator at the bottom. This happens because fluff sticks to moisture, which is a common issue with these machines. Manufacturers have had many problems with the filtration system trying to catch fluff and lint before they reach the condensing and evaporating plate. It seems this is where you had trouble.

I’m sorry to hear that you damaged the circuit board. It might be worth changing the resistor, although I can’t tell you its value off the top of my head. There are a few companies online that repair circuit boards. However, it might be more beneficial for you to find a similar model using your full model number and get a second-hand circuit board from eBay or Facebook Marketplace. You would usually find a faulty machine with a different type of fault than yours, allowing you to take its circuit board and replace it in your machine. You could also get additional spare parts this way.

If your machine was fully functioning before, it’s worth repairing. You would also be able to replace the fluff filter that caused problems. Unfortunately, I don’t have a workshop manual for this machine because Siemens, part of the Bosch group, doesn’t readily share such information. They keep it for their engineers only, which is poor customer service.

I did find exploded diagrams of your machine with all relevant parts listed at the bottom of the page and links to all parts at the top. Heat pump tumble dryers are prone to building up fluff in the condensing box area, but cleaning the whole system out makes them work more efficiently.

I think it’s worth trying to repair by either replacing the resistor or getting a new circuit board from a second-hand machine. However, this decision is ultimately yours. I can only provide information since I don’t have the machine in front of me to inspect it.

Thank you very much for contacting us. If you need any further assistance, feel free to use our contact page.

All the best,
Paul
