How to change a fan oven element General guide

Your fan oven that has stopped heating up is one of the most common oven problems that oven repair & cooker repair engineers are called to in the house. In most cases it is simply a faulty fan oven element.

If you call the manufacture or employ the services of a cooker repair company to replace an oven element is going to cost you in the region of £50 – £125 depending on the company.

We will not only show you in our video how to change the part for free, we will also show you the really cheap way of finding the element around these instructions.

Whether your oven is built in or freestanding, a single or double oven, it makes no difference as the procedure is the same. The first step of the repair is to remove the ‘back-plate’ from inside the fan oven. This is to establish if the cooker or oven will need to come out if it is in a built in unit.

Remove oven when screws are out.

Elements used to heat fan-assisted ovens are, in most cases, located at the rear, behind the back plate. Back plates vary in how they are fixed in place, but normally they are held in by between screws or alankeys.

Taking out the back plate

Once the back plate has been removed the fan oven element and the fan blades will be exposed.

In many cases cooker elements will show visual signs of failure; there may be signs of burning, blowing, bulging, or splitting, in a particular area of the fan oven element. This is confirmation that your oven element needs replacing.

Be aware, however, that in many cases there will be no obvious visual signs of failure whatsoever. (You can test the element with a meter) With the element exposed It will also now become apparent if you need to gain access to the rear of the oven to remove the element.

In most cases there will be no need to remove the oven in order to complete the repair. If the element is simply screwed in place with the screw heads showing then you are in luck. It is just a matter of removing these screws or alankeys and disconnecting the wires.

In these circumstances once the fixing screws have been removed the element will come away from its position. Be careful not to accidentally pull off the electrical wires that are connected to the element as you pull the element free. In some instances manufacturers leave hardly enough wiring which can make it difficult to remove the connections.

If you happen to pull off a connection, the wire may remain in the rear of the oven and you will have to gain access to the rear. I normally put some tape on to hold the in place.

If the element has been secured by screws from the rear of the cooker cavity then the oven will need to be removed from its housing (built in ovens only) in order to remove the back cover. The screws holding the cooker element in place can then be removed easily.

Always ensure that you make a note of which way round the wires are connected to the oven element before you remove them. Most manufactures recommend that you replace your element with a genuine part that will cost you a fair bit. In my 25 year experience most pattern elements that are made are fine and will last just as long, they are normally the same make but come without the pretty manufactures bag or box.

I have a Flava Milano 100 the fan oven is not coming on. The element was replaced a few months ago. When the element failed the oven came on but didn’t get hot. Light came on Fan spun, red light at the front over the control knob came on. Now nothing comes on. I replaced the fan incase a fan fault prevented the rest of the oven working but. it still the same. The none fan oven and f
grill both work fine. With the fact that the red led type light over the control knob does not light up does that possibly mean the control knob is broken (not the actual knob, the control switch mechanism behind it)?

Hi. I have an Indesit FIMD23IX – the main oven is not heating at all. I assume the element needs replacing, but the fan is not spinning at the moment when I turn the oven on – does this mean both the fan AND the element need to be replaced?

    Many thanks,
    Scott

    Hello there,

Wonder if you can help. I have a LAMONA LAM4401 double fan oven. The heating element appears to have gone in the bottom oven (for the 2nd time). I purchased a replacement element to fit myself. I’ve removed the plate inside and I can see the element however I can’t seem to remove it from the front as it doesn’t appear to have screws – the top of the ‘screws’ are flat , as if tapped in.

I pulled the oven out and looks like I’d have to remove the full back cover to access the back.

Are you familiar with these ovens at all? Last time it went it was under warranty and I wasn’t there when it was fixed.
    Many thanks

    Hiya,
I have a Smeg A2-6, and the main oven (fan) tripped the RCD tonight.
Are the element(s) removeable on this model without having to pull the oven away from the wall?
The user manual is not very helpful regarding maintenance, and only helps if you need to change the bulb or a door seal.
The oven is approx. 11yrs old.
    Kind regards!

Hi when our fan element oven was diagnosed as being faulty I watched at least 20 DIY videos and ordered the part. I asked my better half to watch the very same videos before attempting the repair but oh no he told me he didn’t have to – he has changed one before bla bla bla and guess what – the connectors fell through the back of the oven – seriously gutted – anyway we have successfully taken off the back with my imput but we not too sure which colour connector should go back through which hole to be connected to which two prong element. Diplomat double oven – fan oven the one tripping the electric etc – anyway i have read that with a two prong element it doesn’t matter what colour connector gets attached to whichever side – is this correct ordoes my better half play Russian roulette or quote eeniee meaniee mineee mo tomorrow please advise

Hi, on elements the only wire that need to be in the “correct” place is the earth tag. But many elements don’t even have them at all. The live and neutral can go either way.

We have a Fagor 8000 double built in oven which is no longer heating up. I have removed the element / fan cover plate but the element appears to be held in by two bolt headed screws or bolt. There are no little plates behind the oven to provide access. I simply can’t budge the bolts/screws so suspect these are bolts . The back cover of the oven is one big cover. Is it practical to remove this or do I need a specialist? Cheers
