How to replace Dishwasher pump Bosch, Siemens etc

by / Saturday, 10 January 2015 / Published in Dishwasher, Pumps

The drain pump on a dishwasher will always be located at the bottom of the machine, some can be accessed from the front as in this video, others you can removed from under the base of the dishwasher, But the first thing you need to do is drain the water from the inside using a bowl, I find that the top of a spray tin very useful to remove water from below the filter in the water well.

This video will help you remove the old Dishwasher pump and replace with a new one or to clean it

You will need to access the pump from the front of the machine on this model as the base does not come off, this video will show you how to replace the pump on all these make but can differ from model to model. Bosch, Siemens, Airlux, ATAG, Balay, Constructa, Gorenje, Imperial, Koenic, Kuppersbusch, Neff, Pelgrim, Pitsos, Thermador, Tecnik, Viva, V-Zug,

Error Codes for Bosch SMS/SH Series and Exxcel/Logixx Dishwashers:

Possible fault codes are E25, E24, these are drain error codes
Fault Code E20
Symptom: Electrical short or break.
Cause: Short or break causing incorrect resistance in winding of the circulation pump or the motor.
Fault Code E21
Symptom: Circulating pump blocked.
Cause: A blockage between the motor or the pump resulting in insufficient water flow.
Fault Code E23
Cause: As error code E20, but this time the electrical problem is with the drain pump.
Action: Replace drain pump if necessary.
Fault Code E24
Symptom: Dishwasher not draining properly.
Cause: Drain filters blocked.
Action: Clean the filters.
Go to: Why is My Bosch Dishwasher Not Draining?
Fault Code E25
Symptom: Dishwasher not draining properly.
Cause: Possibly blocked filters, as above. Otherwise this fault code could indicate a blocked drain pump.
Fault Code E26
Cause: Water switch/regulator problem.
Action: Check water switch and replace if required.
Fault Code E28
Cause: Fault detected with turbidity sensor.
Symptom: Dishes not getting clean. Dirty water in the tub.
To remove the Dishwasher pump see video and follow these steps

  • 1st you will need to drain down the dishwasher.
  • 2nd You will need to remove the lid and the side panels.
  • 3rd Remove the kick strip.
  • 4th Behind the kick strip you will find an access plate this can be removed by undoing the screws and prizing the plate up slightly on either side.
  • 5th Remove any of the wiring that might get in the way of you undoing the dishwasher pump.
  • 6th This pump is held in place with a bayonet fixing. We just need to depress this clip and twist the pump clockwise on this model (on other models the pump needs to be rotated anti clockwise to release it)
  • 7th When the pump comes out you can remove the wiring from it.
Now you can inspect the pump to see if there are fibers wrapped around it. You can now test the pump with a multi-meter remember the pump in this dishwasher is 54V and is not 240v so don’t try and live test it.

I have a Bosch dishwasher have a error code E:21. At the start of the cycle at will pump some water out through the drainage pipe, you can then hear water flow into the machine for a very short time then nothing for a for seconds then the E:21 error shows. Is this a problem with the circulation pump or a diod?

    thanks Paul,

that was a great video on pump replacement. There was a sticking plaster impacted on the propeller blade of the pump. Once removed it was clear the pump motor had burnt out, but I then quickly had it working once the new pump arrived. Until I saw your video I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing this repair on my own.

what was really impressive was your knowledge about the rotation you have to twist to remove the pump. Ours was anticlockwise, which you specifically mentioned might be the case on some models.

bought you a stella – well deserved,
    Ian

    Dear Paul

Excellent tutorial, I do all the steps and I was able to remove the pump, I got a lecture of 60 ohms with the multimeter, that’s ok? I saw some videos where they say the normal lectures has to be 160 ohms.

    Many thanks.

i have a siemens dishwasher that shows e25.
ive checked the inside of the bottom of the dishwasher.
the dishwasher, when starting, makes a strange clicking noise.
however, after the e25 message, i can hold the stop button and the dishwasher will reset, allowing me to restart the dishwaher, which means the excess liquid in the bottom gets drained out with no problem.
this tells me that the problem isnt the pump.
    what could it be please?

    Thanks Paul,

I have seimens and sometimes I get error E25 not always , but if I run any program after the error appears and then reset , the water is drained out . So if there is a problem in the pump how come it drains upon resetting? Additionally can I remove the propeller blade from the shaft by pulling to remove the fibers gathered between the blade and the pump body? If yes can it be done without removing the pump?

I have a Bosch dishwasher where the top spinner arm doesn’t seem to be getting a supply of water where as the bottom spinner arm seems fully pressurised. I have take all of the internal plastic conduits out to see if it is a blockage but they are clear. When I run it with all of the internal conduits and covers out there is no water coming out of the base plate port which feed the top spinner arm but plenty coming out of the port which feeds the bottom spinner arm. Guess it can’t be the pump but what else can it be?

Our Siemens dishwasher wasn’t draining so I changed the drain pump for new one from Siemens but the dishwasher is not starting. I can hear a hum sound but no water is coming in. Model number is SE 64630GB/13. Any advise you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Drain hose seems fine. Is there a shut off valve that needs to be reset? many thanks. Ash

I have an Error 2, in my Siemens dishwasher?

    Thanks!

    First of all, great video!

Can this also work for the famous “E:24” of Bosch dishwashers? If so, please let me know.

Compliments with your site. Regarding a SBV68M90EU, I am getting an E20 message what would be right video to watch or what do you recommend? Thx Tom

Hi Paul, thanks for your clear explanations.

We don’t have an error code, and the machine is emptying, but we get some thumping sounds, mainly while filling.
Last time this happened, the visiting repair guy removed and cleaned out the translucent flexible pipe towards the left behind the metal panel at the bottom front.
    It’s a Siemens SE50T592EU built-in model.
Is the procedure for removing the panel just the same but without the need to take off the top and sides?
Can I get enough access to the pipe without removing the door?
Or is there something else I should be looking at?

      Forgot to mention:
      – the finished dishes are now still rather wet
      – it’s only a couple of months since we ran a ‘grease and limescale remover’ cycle (with a bottle of the genuine stuff).

      / David

    • i cant really say without seeing the machine as each one varies in the way the come apart

Just to let you know, the metal panel does come off without removing the door. It’s a bit fiddly, but a short torx driver does the trick (a long thin one would also work, with the door open flat). Getting it back on was worse – I was looking for something to hook the front edge on to, but it’s stiff enough to support itself.

Why clearing the drain pipe silences the water intake is still a mystery, but it does!

Saved myself a callout fee, it only cost me one sticking plaster 😉

        Thanks / David

    Hi
Great video but I have exxcel slimeline dishwasher and can’t seem to locate the lugs to remove the top (the machine is not draining and I suspect blocked hose).
The fixingings on mine seem to be much furher back than you were releasing on the video.

    Any help appreciated
    Mark

      Sorted,
Found clips at the back, just had to walk away and look again with fresh eyes (first hour just wasn’t enough).
      Cheers

We have a Bosch dishwasher SGS46E12GB/64 it runs but stalls with the display
saying ‘1. The control PCB looks OK no dry joints etc no tested the relays. The pump is clear clean. If we press the buttons marked reset the program ends and the water is pumped out. Hoses look OK no damage water appear to get hot.
Any ideas what the problem could be
    Thanks

Great video – did the trick for me!
One question – as you remove the front panel two white plastic spacer blocks of some sort (I think) drop out of the bottom of the door. This happened to me too! Any hints as to where they came from, as I don’t know!

Always a bit disconcerting to have parts left over after reassembly…

    Thanks again.

I have error code E23 on Siemens sn26M290GB, I have taken out the pump and cleaned it – put it all back together and the code is still there. Should I do anything else before purchasing a new pump? If it makes any difference I recently had error code E15 I managed to clear that by tilting the machine forwards!

    Hi Paul,

Excellent video – much better than the repair clinic ones with the droney American voice overs!!

Do you have a similar video showing how to access / change the heating element on the same dishwasher (Bosch Classixx)??

I’m asking as the repair clinic one I’ve found is only for a built in appliance like they mostly have in USA and doesn’t show how I get the base off of a freestanding UK model in order to access.

I have a e09 error message so assume I need a new heating element although wanted to investigate first as I originally had a drainage error for which the reccommended fix was to tilt the unit back slightly. This, along with a good clean, removed the drainage issue but then gave me this new error towards the end of the next cycle so I’m a bit suspicious that I maybe loosened a connection etc.

    Cheers Paul!!

    Dan
