How does a Washing Machine Pump Works?

The main thing to know is that the pump runs on mains voltage, and spins an impeller round creating a vortex and expelling water out. It’s an extremely simple part.
A pump is a simple induction motor with an impeller and no serviceable parts. To run the pump, the machine just supplies it with power. The pump impeller just spins round and pumps water out through the waste hose.
The only thing you can test on the motor is the continuity of the field windings across the two connectors use a meter for this, or if the impeller is jammed clear the bits from this and you can check that no hoses are blocked, if the appliance waste hose is fitted to a sink unit check your fittings are not blocked.

Do not test anything with the machine connected to the mains!

What commonly goes wrong when the Washing Machine Pump is faulty?

How to replace Beko washing machine pump or unblock the filterBefore the motor starts to turn, if you can hear a gentle humming noise, this may be a jammed pump trying to turn;
Some obstructions such as socks or a blocked filter don’t stop the impeller from spinning as normal but can prevent or restrict water from flowing through the drain hose;

If the field coil of a water pump goes open circuit, the pump fails to run, and the washing machine may not take in any water;
Washing machine pumps can become noisy if the bearings fail. Nine times out of ten though, a noisy pump is caused by an obstruction colliding with the rotating impeller. This often manifests itself as a grinding, grating sound that can come and go or be constant (depending on the obstruction). If the noise is due to bearing failure then the pump must be replaced.

To replace a Beko washing machine pump might sound scary, but it’s a surprisingly easy to replace and then fit a new pump with the help of our video.

      I had the same problem with my Beko. In my case, the filter was just very stiff, and I had to make a tool to get a better grip on it. With a better grip I was able to undo it. (It unscrews in the conventional manner, turn to the left to undo). To make the tool, I found a bit of wood that just fitted inside the circular part of the filter, and then cut a slot in this to accommodate the bar that runs across the front of the filter. This tool allowed me to unscrew the filter easily, and now lives under the machine ready for the next time the filter needs removing.

      Theres maybe something jamming it. Take off tbe panel that runs along the bottom of the front of the machine to expose the screws to release the filter.

    Mine actually wouldn’t spin properly or drain unclocked using the how on this thread and it’s worked absolutely fine. It would constantly get stuck on 21 minutes on a wash and would continually wash I would have to then switched it off for it to end the cycle and then spin it, however it never drain properly on a spin cycle would get stuck on 8 would never spin it and then clothes would be at through. Now my washer works again, I knew something was clogged as I washed so cushion covers and the fibres that came from them caused it to get clogged. I knew after that wash as it never worked after that but was shocked from the amount of fibres that came off them.

    Great video, am just in the middle of running a check cycle having removed and cleaned the pump. With a 6 day baby at home and the machine going on the blink, this has been a life saver

    Great clear video. Big new rattling noises today from the pump area…some fluff had twisted halfway into the impeller and the impeller had come off . I am going to have a go at fixing it now. Thank you!

    Hello, I have a WMB 81241LS washer which will not fully drain. After a wash the clothes are not 100% spun and about 1 pint of water remains in the coin catcher filter. I have bought a new drain pump and removed every hose cleaned them out and replaced. I have cleaned the drain hose and also made sure there are not blockages along the pipes to the house drain. I get no error code on the dignostic but when in drain mode water is left in the drum like it is finishing the drain cycle too early. In spin and drain cycle no water is left in the drum but about a pint of water remains in the coin catcher. Please could you advise, with thanks Diana

    I tried to unscrew the drain pump filter but it would not unscrew. I tried using pliers but this has broken the little handle that you have to use to turn it. Now I have no idea how to get the filter off so I can replace it. I would really appreciate any help.
