Installing a New Heating Element & Bearing in a Hotpoint/Indesit Tumble Dryer

Is your tumble dryer taking longer to dry clothes than a wet dog in a blizzard? Is your tumble dryer taking hours to dry your clothes? Then you may have a problem with either the heater or the thermostats.

In this guide, we will show you how to install a new heating system in a vented or condenser tumble dryer. Additionally, we'll guide you through the replacement of a pear-shaped bearing located at the back of the machine. This bearing, also known as a fast response bearing, should ideally be replaced every four to five years depending on the machine's usage.

Since there are crucial problems that can arise due to fluff buildup within the appliance, we suggest regular maintenance every four to five years to prevent such issues and extend the lifespan of your machine, not to mention preventing potential fire hazards.

It's important to note that during our initial testing, we found that the machine had overheated, which likely caused the element to malfunction on one of the circuits. This malfunction is evidenced by the inability to switch to high heat. This problem was likely triggered by fluff buildup in the machine.

Safety First!

  • Unplug your Indesit tumble dryer before starting work.
  • Organize screws and parts meticulously to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Screwdrivers (various sizes) or chargeable drill with correct extensions (if you have one).

Let's dive into the steps required to rectify the problem and perform necessary maintenance.

Remove the Plinth & Right Panel

Before you begin, ensure the machine is unplugged from the electricity supply.

You'll need a flat blade screwdriver to remove the plinth. There are a couple of screws here that you'll need to remove. There's also a screw at the bottom that needs to be undone.

You only need to remove the right-hand side panel. There are screws holding it in place all the way around, plus a retention bar. Once you've removed these, you can easily take the panel off.

Replace the Hotpoint/Indesit Tumble Dryer's Bearing J00655170 C00142628

Normally, a wire tightly wraps around the bearing. To replace the bearing, straighten this wire and pull it through. Once removed, clean up the shaft as there might be a buildup of dirt.

Inspect the shaft. If the bearing hasn't worn all the way through, the shaft should be in perfect condition. If the bearing has worn through, it would have cut into the metal of the shaft.

Compare the old and new bearings to ensure they are identical. Then, drop the new bearing onto the shaft and secure it in place with the screw.

It's worth noting that some engineers might recommend applying grease or a lubricant to the shaft, but we advise against it. The reason for this is that any dust within the machine will stick to the grease, effectively creating a grinding compound which will accelerate bearing wear.

Replace the Hotpoint/Indesit Tumble Dryer's Heating Element J00255941 C00282401

To replace the heating element, you can start by removing the screws that secure it. Carefully detach the element, taking care with its delicate coils, and inspect it for signs of damage or excessive fluff buildup.

Then, use a multimeter set to ohms to check for continuity across the element and then disconnect the wires from the thermostats to test each one for continuity as well. If the element shows wear or fails the continuity test, replace it with a new one.

You will need to install the new heating element securely with the appropriate screws and ensure all wires are reattached and properly insulated to prevent interference with other components.

After that, you should secure the side panel back in place, ensuring all catches align correctly, and double-check the support bars to strengthen the cabinet structure.

Finally, reconnect the electrical supply and test the dryer to ensure it heats properly and functions correctly.

By following these steps, you can successfully install a new heating system and replace the pear-shaped bearing in your Indesit tumble dryer. Regular maintenance and timely replacements are essential to extend the lifespan of your appliance and prevent potential fire hazards.
