Understanding How Condenser Tumble Dryers Work
If your machine is taking too long to dry, half of the problem usually stems from the condenser box, filter, and the ducting system. Understanding the dual airflows in your machine can help you troubleshoot.
In your dryer, one motor operates two fan blades. The rear fan blade, located next to the heating element, drives the hot air circuit. The front fan blade operates the cold air circuit. The hot air is driven through the heating element into the drum, which evaporates the water in your clothes. This warm, moist air then travels down through the filter and through the condensing box before being reheated by the heating element.
The front fan blade pulls in cold air which is drawn into the condensing box. The warm air and cold air meet in the condenser, similar to how a car windscreen collects moisture on cold mornings. The water droplets are then collected and transferred to a collection tray at the top of the machine.

Maintenance Tips
Regular maintenance is important for all condenser tumble dryers. If the machine is not properly maintained, it will work less efficiently than it should, extending drying times and increasing electricity usage.
For example, in a poorly maintained Hotpoint or Indesit dryer in the video, the air can't even flow through the box because it becomes so blocked. It's crucial to remove this blockage to ensure the machine can function efficiently.
You can clean a slightly dirty condenser unit with a tough brush or a soft cloth to remove any built-up fluff and debris. However, for severely blocked condensers, you may need to use a pressure washer or high-pressure hose.
Cleaning the Condenser Unit
If the condenser is severely blocked, you'll need to take it outside for a more thorough cleaning. The slots in the condenser are very small and difficult to clean, so you'll need to clean in multiple directions to remove the blockage.
A hose pipe can be used to flush out some of the fluff, but a pressure washer will be more effective at removing the blockage. After a few seconds of pressure washing, you'll see the amount of fluff that was blocking the air flow in the condenser box.
After cleaning, the condensers on all machines should be clean and ready to use. However, if the ducting systems are clogged up with fluff, the machine may need a full strip down and service before it can be used again.
