Today, we are looking at an incredibly common fault with modern Hoover and Candy integrated washing machines: the motor runs, but the drum refuses to turn.
Recently, I rescued a 15 month old Hoover washing machine from heading straight to the landfill. When put on the test bay, the motor was drawing between 25W and 70W of power (increasing as the spin speed was dialed up), and you could clearly hear it running. However, the drum remained completely stationary. The customer, likely assuming the sealed drum had failed and fearing an expensive repair bill, simply threw it away.
Believe it or not, this machine was suffering from a factory assembly error that can be fixed for as little as £15. In this repair guide, I will show you exactly what causes this issue, how to replace a stripped pulley wheel, and why you should be very careful when relying on manufacturer warranties.
The Root Cause: Stripped Pulley Wheel Splines on Hoover Washing Machine
If you take the back panel off your Hoover/Candy washing machine and find that the drive belt has fallen off, do not just slip it back on. Grab the large pulley wheel attached to the back of the drum and give it a wiggle. If it feels loose, you have found your problem.
On older Hoover washing machines, manufacturers used heavy-duty aluminium pulley wheels or secure splined systems that rarely failed. However, many modern Hoover and Candy machines use a plastic pulley wheel with a central spline that fits over a metal shaft.
Why does it fail? During manufacturing, the factory relies on a thread-locking compound (like Loctite) to keep the central Torx 40 nut tightly secured. If they do not apply enough thread-locking compound far down the thread, the vibrations from normal washing and spinning will slowly loosen the nut. Once the nut is loose, the pulley wheel begins to wobble. Because the metal shaft is much stronger than the plastic pulley wheel, the metal simply strips the plastic splines clean off.
Why the 10 Year Parts Warranty Can Be a Trap
You might be wondering why a 15 month old machine was scrapped instead of fixed under warranty. By law in the UK, machines come with a standard 12-month guarantee. Many brands boast an additional “10 Year Parts Warranty” which sounds fantastic on paper.
However, this is often a false economy. If you claim against that parts warranty, the manufacturer will mandate that their own engineer fits the part. You are then hit with a hefty call out charge and labor fees. For a machine that only cost £350 brand new, paying upwards of £120 to £130 in labor charges makes the repair seem uneconomical especially if the customer mistakenly thinks the entire sealed drum unit is broken.
How to Replace the Pulley Wheel on Hoover & Candy Washing Machine
Fortunately, this is a straightforward DIY repair. You will need a Torx 40 attachment, a new pulley wheel, and a high-quality thread-locking compound. (Amazon affiliate link for the Torx 40 Safety Set)
1. Remove the Old Components
- Undo the screws holding the back panel onto the washing machine and set the panel aside.
- Using a Torx 40 bit, undo the central nut holding the pulley wheel in place.
- Slide the old, stripped pulley wheel off the metal shaft.
2. Prep the Shaft and Bolt
- Thoroughly clean the old, dried locking compound off the metal drum shaft.
- Clean the threads of the original Torx 40 retaining bolt to ensure the new compound will bond correctly.
3. Apply Thread-Locking Compound
- Squeeze a generous amount of thread lock (Amazon affiliate link for the locking compound) directly onto the threads of the bolt. Do not skimp on this step, as inadequate locking compound is what caused the failure in the first place.
4. Fit the New Pulley Wheel
- Slide the replacement pulley wheel onto the shaft, ensuring the splines line up.
- Thread the bolt in by hand. You may need to wedge a piece of wood or a locking bar against the pulley wheel to stop it from turning while you work.
- Tighten the bolt using your Torx 40 tool. As you tighten, it will pull the shaft all the way through the wheel. It usually takes about three full turns under tension to seat it perfectly.
5. Re-fit and Align the Drive Belt
- Hook the drive belt over the small motor spindle at the bottom first.
- Stretch the belt over the top of the new pulley wheel and slowly rotate the wheel to feed the belt fully on.
- Crucial Alignment Check: Look closely at the motor spindle; it has multiple grooves. You do not want the belt sitting too far back and rubbing against the plastic tub. Manually rotate the large pulley wheel a few times. This allows the belt to find its natural center path along the grooves. Adjust its position on the bottom motor spindle until the belt runs perfectly central on the large top pulley.
Paul’s Note: Thread-locking compounds need time to cure. Always consult the instructions on the bottle and leave the machine to sit for the required number of hours before running a wash cycle.
Final Thoughts on Consumer Rights
This entire failure stems from poor manufacturing, yet it is the consumer and the independent retailer who ultimately pay the price. The 2015 Consumer Rights Act provides some protection, but the system unfairly places the burden on the retailer (the middleman who only makes a £30-£40 margin) rather than the manufacturer who poorly assembled the unit.
To protect yourself and your wallet, always try to purchase domestic appliances that come with a standard 5-year parts AND labor guarantee. Do your research, ask the salesperson if the machine features a sealed drum (which removes your right to a cheap bearing repair), and boycott brands that deliberately build obsolescence into their products.
