Safety First!
- Unplug your Indesit tumble dryer before starting work.
- Organize screws and parts meticulously to avoid confusion during reassembly.
Tools You'll Need:
- Screwdrivers (various sizes) or chargeable drill with correct extensions (if you have one).
- Belt if needed.
- Motor if needed.
Identifying the Tumble Dryer's Problem
If your tumble dryer drum is not turning, yet you can hear the motor running, it's likely the belt has failed. If the dryer makes a humming noise when switched on, but the drum fails to turn, the problem may lie with the motor or the capacitor.
If your machine produces unusual noises compared to when it was new, it could be an early sign of bearing failure. Regularly inspecting the back bearing (approximately every year to year and a half) can prevent further damage.
There are also two pads and sometimes a couple of jockey wheels at the front of the machine, which we will explain how to replace later in this guide.
This guide applies to all Hotpoint, Indesit, and Ariston vented and condenser tumble dryers, with minor differences in the disassembly process.
Remember to use your full model number from the identification plate when obtaining parts for your tumble dryer from our website.
Dismantling the Indesit Tumble Dryer
Before starting, always disconnect the appliance from the electricity supply.
- First, remove the plinth by releasing three clips at the front. This exposes the screws underneath the machine, which you need to undo.
- Next, remove the lid. There are two screws keeping it in place, tap it towards you from the back to release the plastic at the front, then the lid will come away.
- There are four screws on the retention bar at the top. The screws on the outside are larger than the inside screws. Slide this bar backwards to remove it, noting that it fits into lugs that slide backwards and come out during reassembly.
- There are two more screws to undo, then slide the side panel backwards to remove it.
- There's a bracket at the bottom, part of the new reinforcing system by Hotpoint and Indesit; keep this separate. Then, undo three screws up the panel and one more screw just inside the dryer. Keep the screws in order, as you'll need to put them back in their correct holes later.
- To remove the side panel, you need to slide it backwards, and it will come away. Take note of the two to three location lugs at the front.
Troubleshooting a Humming Noise
If your machine is making a humming noise, the capacitor might be the issue. If the drum turns freely without restriction, yet you still hear a humming noise, lift up the flap to locate the capacitor.
To continue the troubleshooting process, the capacitor is typically located inside a protective plastic box which is held in place by a couple of clips. You can release these clips to inspect the capacitor.
Remember to take the necessary precautions when handling the capacitor, as they can store an electrical charge even when the machine is unplugged. You should use a resistor or a screwdriver with an insulated handle to safely discharge the capacitor before you proceed.
If you notice any signs of bulging, leaking, or rupture on the capacitor, it likely needs to be replaced.
Replacing The Indesit Tumble Dryer Belt
- You will first need to remove the drum. You can start by disconnecting the wiring for the heater and sensors. Take a photo before you disconnect the wiring to help you reconnect them correctly later.
- Next, remove the heater by unscrewing the bolts that hold it in place. Once the heater is removed, you can access the drum shaft.
- Remove the circlip and washer from the drum shaft, and then you can pull the drum out. Be careful not to lose the spacers that are between the drum and the sides of the machine.
- Since the drum removed, you can now replace the belt. Place the new belt around the drum and align it with the motor pulley, and right after that stretch the belt and loop it over the pulley.
Reassembling The Indesit Tumble Dryer
Reassembling the Indesit clothes dryer involves reversing the disassembly process.
- You can start by reinserting the drum into the machine. Make sure to align the spacers correctly and then secure the drum shaft with the washer and circlip.
- Reinstall the heater and reconnect the wiring. Refer to the photo you took earlier to ensure the wiring is connected correctly.
- Finally, reattach the side panels, the retention bar, and the lid. Make sure to secure all screws tightly.
- Once everything is back in place, reconnect the dryer to the electricity supply and run a test cycle to ensure everything is working correctly.
With this guide, you should be able to service and replace the tumble dryer belt and bearings on any Hotpoint, Indesit or Ariston vented and condenser tumble dryers. Remember to always take necessary safety precautions when working with electrical appliances.
