Replacing Carbon Brush in Your Washing Machine Motor

In this repair guide, we will explain how to replace the carbon brush in your washing machine motor. This tutorial can help you with various appliances like Whirlpool, Hoover, Electrolux and AEG, as most motors are fitted at the bottom of the machine.

We show you how to remove the belt, how to remove the motor, and how to change the carbon brush in the motor in the video, and we recommend you watch it thoroughly.

Removing the Back Plate, Belt & Motor of Whirlpool, Hoover, Electrolux & AEG Washing Machines

You will begin with the removal of the back plate. You will find that there are three types of motor fixings: two bolts, three bolts (which allows tension to be placed on the motor via a sliding bracket), or four bolts. The motor in the video, for instance, has two bolts with four locating lugs.

You should be careful when removing the belt because some edges might be sharp and can damage your skin.

Again, this specific motor is secured by two bolts and four locating lugs. After you remove the bolts, you need to disconnect the wiring.

You can remove the carbon brusher by undoing the two screws on each side. They're typically six-millimeter nut heads, but some use phillips screwdrivers or a star drive. The most common nut sizes are 6 millimeters, 7 millimeters, or 5.5 millimeters, though you might occasionally find a quarter-inch drive.

The wires that hold these brusher in place feature a locking mechanism. You need to undo a small clip to remove the connection, typically a small spade or female spade connector.

Once you've removed the brusher, it's useful to check the armature for any lugs rising on the commutator. At this stage, you can see the mounting brackets for the brush and notice the variation in length. That's why watching the video would be beneficial for you to not make mistakes.

When fitting the new carbon brush, place your finger inside the motor to ensure the brush doesn't collapse or break. Once the brush is positioned in its two fixing points, reinsert the screws and reconnect the wiring.

Before fitting the motor back, turn the armature to ensure the carbon brusher are seating correctly. Now, you can go ahead and fit the motor back into the washing machine.

Ensure the machine is tilted at a 30-40 degree angle. Avoid laying the machine down without the transit brackets as it could cause damage. Once the machine is correctly positioned, you can connect the wiring. This is usually a push fit block connector that can only fit one way. Additionally, this motor has a female spade connector that connects to a male for the earth wire.

Tighten the bolts by your hand and then give them an additional quarter turn. The last thing to do is replace the belt.
