Guide on How to Replace a Drum on a Hotpoint or Indesit Washing Machine

In this guide, we'll walk you through how to replace a drum in a Hotpoint or Indesit washing machine. This guide is also applicable to any Whirlpool-manufactured machines.

To start, it's crucial to determine whether the bearings or the drum needs replacing. Previously, it was more cost-effective to replace the bearings, but many modern machines feature sealed drums, which can be expensive to replace.

You'll know the bearings need replacing if you hear a specific noise when lifting the drum or during rotation. This usually indicates that the bearings and spider have collapsed and the drum needs replacing.

We tried to be concise and give brief information on this guide, so we would recommend you watch our video since we're showing you how easily you can change the drum of a Whirlpool made washing machine.

Additionally, you can visit our web store to buy genuine spare parts: https://shop.how-to-repair.com/collections/washing-machine-parts

Safety First!

  • Unplug your Hotpoint washing machine before starting work.
  • Organize screws and parts meticulously to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Screwdrivers (phillips or flat blade)
  • New drum
  • New suspension legs (if needed)
  • New belt (if needed)
  • New door lock (if needed)

Finding the Right Drum for Your Model

To find the correct drum for your machine, use your full model number, which can be found on the front or back of the machine. Enter this into the website and search. If you can't find the right drum, use the contact us page on the website and request a quotation for a drum. Make sure to provide your full model number.

We'll begin by working on the bottom of the machine before moving to the top and lifting the drum out. To do this, we need to strip down the machine. The front panel doesn't detach from this model, so we'll work from the bottom.

Removing Panels and Draining the Machine

Start by draining the machine. Ensure there's no water left in the machine. Next, remove the back plate of the machine.

You'll find the sticker with the full model number at the bottom, which is useful for finding the right drum for your machine.

Removing Belt, Motor, and Heater Wiring

Next, take off the belt, undo the electrics off the heater, the NTC sensor, the earth wire, and the live wire. Cut a couple of cable ties, and unplug the motor. Undo the hose at the bottom of the drum.

To lessen the weight when lifting the drum out of the machine, remove the motor in location. There are two 10mm bolts on this motor. Ease the motor away while supporting it. Use a flat blade screwdriver, go underneath, support the motor, lift it away, and drop the motor down.

This machine has a three-phase motor, not a brush motor. If it was a brush motor, it would be advisable to inspect the carbon brushes.

Please remember that the whole video includes step-by-step and detailed explanations, which may help you reduce your repair time.

Removing the Top Panel and Lifting Out the Drum

Once the motor has been removed, it's time to take off the top panel of the washing machine. Unscrew the screws holding the panel in place and lift it off.

With the top panel removed, you can now lift out the drum. This can be a bit tricky, so take your time. We suggest you ask for a friend to help lift the drum out in case you don't have the hoist system.

Installing the New Drum

Before you install the new drum, give the inside of the washing machine a good clean. This will ensure that your new drum operates efficiently and doesn't get clogged up with old detergent or dirt.

When you're ready, place the new drum into the machine. Make sure it's properly seated and aligned with the mounts. Once the drum is in place, you can start reconnecting the various components.

Reconnecting the Motor, Wiring, Belt & Testing the Machine

You can start with the motor. Lift it into place and secure it with the bolts. Next, reconnect the wiring for the heater, NTC sensor, earth wire, and live wire.

The last step is to attach the belt. Make sure it's correctly aligned and tensioned. Once everything is in place, put the panels back on the machine and secure them with the screws.

You can visit our belt replacing repair guide to understand the steps correctly.

Before you start using your washing machine again, it's important to test it. Run a short cycle without any clothes to ensure everything is working correctly. Listen for any unusual noises and check for leaks. If everything is in order, you can start using your washing machine again.

Again, our video includes step-by-step and detailed explanations that includes the drum tub, belt, sump hose, door lock, pressure switch, NTC sensor and more items. If you don't want to make mistakes during the replacing and dismantling process, you can watch our helpful video guide to ease your mind.
