How to Prevent Hotpoint Tumble Dryers From Overheating & Locate the Thermostats?

In this guide, we'll be discussing Whirlpool-made Hotpoint and Indesit tumble dryers. Our goal is to cover the heating systems, maintenance procedures, and testing of thermostats in these machines.

Please remember that, when working with any electrical appliances, safety should always be your top priority, and we also suggest you watch our video.

Safety First!

  • Unplug your Indesit tumble dryer before starting work.
  • Organize screws and parts meticulously to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Screwdrivers (various sizes) or chargeable drill with correct extensions (if you have one).
  • Multimeter

Before we delve into the specifics, let’s emphasize the importance of proper care for your tumble dryer. Neglecting maintenance can lead to issues down the line. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Complete the Cycle: When using the timer, allow the machine to finish its entire cycle before opening the door. The last 10 minutes serve as a cooling-down period.
  2. Safety First: Whirlpool prioritizes safety. If the machine exceeds the thermostat’s capacity, it will blow to prevent overheating.
  3. Regular Maintenance:
  • Duct Cleaning: Clean the ducting system monthly. Ignoring this can lead to airflow restrictions and thermostat problems.
  • Absorption Plate: For condenser dryers, clean the absorption plate. Warm air passes through it, condensing moisture. Ensure it’s clear to maintain efficient drying.
  • Filter Cleaning: Vented tumble dryers have a filter that must be cleaned after every load. Keep it free of lint and debris.
  • Vent Tube: Check the vent tube for any blockages. Proper airflow prevents thermostat failures.

Preventing Overheating

To prevent overheating issues in your tumble dryer, it's critical to allow the machine to complete its full cycle before opening the door. This is especially important if you've set the timer for 60 minutes, as the last 10 minutes are a cooling down period.

Residual heat can cause the dryer's temperature to rise when the door is opened mid-cycle. If the temperature exceeds the cut-off thermostat's capability, it will blow. This is a safety feature designed by Whirlpool, who have taken significant measures to ensure their tumble dryers are safe.

Another common issue arises when the machine is not adequately maintained. While it might be tempting to simply load your laundry and forget about it, it's important to clean the ducting system once a month. For condenser dryers, the absorption plate also needs regular cleaning.

On vented tumble dryers, the air filter needs to be cleaned after every load, just like in condenser dryers. Additionally, once a month, you should vacuum the hole at the front and ensure the vent tube is unobstructed. Overloading the machine or any restriction in airflow can lead to thermostatic system failures.

Dismantling the Hotpoint Tumble Dryer & Locating the Thermostats

To access these components, you'll need to remove the right-hand side panel. Although it is possible to test the top thermostat and the two forward thermostats by only removing the lid and facial panel, we recommend removing the whole back panel for a comprehensive check.

The tools you'll need to dismantle your tumble dryer include a Phillips screwdriver, a pair of pin nose pliers, and a multimeter for testing.

Start by undoing the two screws on the lid. Tap the lid backwards to release it as it catches on the plastic. Once done, you can remove the side panel.

After removing the side panel, you will see a metal plate on the interior side. This plate is held in place by four screws. Use your screwdriver to remove these screws.

Once the screws are removed, carefully pull the plate away from the dryer. Be cautious as the edges of the plate can be sharp. Behind this plate, you will find the thermostats.

Identifying and Testing the Thermostats

There are usually two thermostats located side by side. They are small, round devices with two wires connected to each.

To test the thermostats, you need to disconnect the wires and use a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting and test each thermostat. A good thermostat will give a reading of zero or close to zero. If the reading is infinity or a high number, it indicates the thermostat is faulty and needs to be replaced.

The heating element is usually located at the bottom of the dryer, encased in a metal housing. To access the heating element, you may have to remove more panels or parts depending on your specific model.

Once you've accessed the heating element, you can test it in a similar way to the thermostats. Disconnect the wires and use the multimeter to check for resistance. If the reading is high or infinity, the heating element is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Remember to always unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet before starting any repair work to avoid electric shock.

Although our aim is to guide you through preventing Hotpoint/Indesit tumble dryers from overheating, checking the heating elements, etc. in this guide, we would recommend you watch the whole video to learn each step in detail.

Reassembling the Hotpoint Tumble Dryer

Once the testing and any necessary replacements are done, you can start reassembling your tumble dryer.

Firstly, connect the wires back to the thermostats and the heating element. Then, place the metal plate back on the interior side and secure it with the four screws.

Next, reattach the side panel and secure it with screws. Make sure it fits snugly in place.

Lastly, attach the lid back onto the top of the machine. Ensure it catches onto the plastic and secure it with the two screws.
