FORGOT YOUR DETAILS?

When it comes to solar energy and running appliance there are two choices, solar water systems, and solar electric. most high amperage appliances are either cooking or heating water (washing.

Cooking a meal uses a lot of energy as most ovens are drawing about 10 amp, if you relate this to a chicken dinner, for example, you will spend about 30 minutes getting to temperature then you will cook for about an hour and a half, while cooking the oven will cycle on the thermostat maintaining co constant temperature of say 2ooc.

facts on energy usage. a oven uses 10amp = 2.4 kw at 240v. this will then be 30 minutes getting to temperature, followed by one and a half hours cycling total usage about 2.4kw for this time period.

= 3.6 kW for a 2-hour cooking session if the electric is charged at (average cost of electricity per kWh is 14.37p) = about £0.50 per meal

washing clothes also uses a lot of energy the average water temp coming into your house is 10c but most washes are a minimum temperature of say 40c so you have to lift the water temp 30 degrees.

Solar Water Heating

Hot Solar Water is Europes leading solar water panel manufacture and they install water heating systems around the world.

Hot water heating (on average) accounts for approx. 30% of your annual energy bill in the
The United Kingdom. That is for showers, washing machines, baths and kitchens, etc….
With a Solar Water Heating system, you could generate enough energy to heat up to 70% of
your hot water FREE, year after year.  With a 35+ year life expectancy, the savings are
considerable in addition to giving you energy independence. Solar water heating system's
benefits are clear.

  • Generate up to 70% of your hot water FREE
  • 35+ year life expectancy; save on your energy bill year after year.
  • As fossil fuel prices continue to rise solar will save you more and more

Solar Electicty

When you install a PV System it makes good sense to maximise your own self-consumption of the freely generated energy. To achieve this there are two main ways of doing so. Firstly, you can add a battery to the system which will store any unused energy created during the day and will make this energy available either at night or when cloud cover causes the panels to produce less than the demand. The other method is to program your home appliances such as Washing Machine, Tumble Dryer, etc to come on during the height of the day. For example, you could program your washing machine to come on at 12 Noon and your Tumble Dryer or Dishwasher to come on at 2 pm. This will ensure these appliances are using as much free energy as they can.

Installing a larger Solar PV System with a battery may be able to charge the battery fully before 12 Noon, then power Washing Machines, Tumble Dryers & Dishwashers Etc on a staggered sequence after the battery is fully charged. Will will mean that even energy normally used at night can come from the stored energy in the battery.

Most homes have a fridge and freezer, these appliances draw power 24 hours a day. Even installing a small Solar PV System can significantly reduce you energy bill as the Solar PV could be able to supply the homes “baseload” with free solar energy. The baseload of a home is the amount of energy consumed when the occupants are out. This is generally energy used for Fridges, Freezers, Alarm Clocks etc.

It makes a lot of sense to use highly efficient appliances, A+ and above. As these will use much less energy to operate.
