Hi All

I have been doing repairs for 30 years and I think it is disgusting that the manufactures do this on a lot of washing machines , there is no saving on the way that they make the drums like this, and there is only a few bolts that saves them few pennies. We are meant to be caring about the environment but now most of the manufactures are doing these welded drums to build in obsolesce. Washing Machines should be able to be repaired, where possible affordably.
I would advise all our customers and viewers to make sure, when buying a new washing machine that they ask the sales man/woman (is the drum welded or can I change the drum bearings) and If not, find one that can be done. Avoid all manufactures that build machines like this as they are deliberately building them this way so that they only last so many cycles, and there for guarantee that the washing machine will only last so many years before you have to buy a new one.

Even the people at Which? Magazine say this: To see their article click here

Which? magazine reliability expert Matt Stevens says: 'It’s madness that consumers are faced with repairs costing as much as a new machine. Manufacturers need to make machines that can be repaired cheaply and easily and need to share all of the information they hold about how to repair their machines with independent repair specialists.

Please will all readers of this article leave your opinion, however blunt, below including the make of the machine and Use the share button below to expose this information to friends and family.

Just maybe one of the manufactures will listen to sense.

A welded Washing Machine Drum

welded drum

To replace this Starts at £140 to £400 Plus!!!

A Non Welded Washing Machine Drum

drum that splits with screws

To replace the bearings and seals start from £10 to about £50 Affordable!!

With smooth production like this, Why do the manufactures of all machines need to weld the drums?

Some things you can do with a washing machine drum when the bearings are gone.

1 they make great flower pots.
2 clothes line pole holder with wheels.
3 shop lights.
4 flood lights.
5 out side display lights with plants.
6 fire pits. to keep you warm.
7 Gas bbq racks with volcanic rock,
8 complete BBQ
9 log store.
10 Bar Table.
and my favorite small wind turbine

    I Have a Candy Grand O 7 years old.
I had to change the whole drum as it is sealed welded.
Now I will repair the old drum cut and bolt and leave it as a spare as these drums are all the same.

YOU CAN REPLACE THE BEARINGS IN A SEALED DRUM MACHINE!! All you need is a knowledgeable repairman. The factory service representatives will refuse to do it, but if you get an independent shop owner who knows his stuff, he’ll do it by sdrilling holes around the glued seam of the plastic drum container, and then sawing the sealed plastic at the point where the factory glued it together. After removing the stainless steel drum, he’ll replace the bearings and the water seal and put the drum back together with either waterproof glue or silicone sealant, and driving screws & nuts around the seam to hold it together. For more information on how this is done, check out this Youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4qycy9uoNE

The drum of the Indesit WIXE 13 is welded, if washing machine enthusiasts care to know.
This is an ingenious machine. It was perhaps 1,5 years old when the display started irregularly flashing as if overdosing on detergents, hard water and my hobby handyman socks. My wife miraculously managed to outwit it for a while with sixth sense programming, then gave up. For a while we used the 21 year old, rusty “old school” Zanussi. Then, on an optimistic day calling for new adventures in home repair, I googled this malfunction, found it to be a typical problem, watched suspenseful videos of the repair with background pole dancing and Russian roulette, and actually managed to replace the capacitor – or whatever that was – and the motor brushes without soldering my radio antenna to the board. I wept with joy and spent the night in the drum.
Today this wild animal has fixated on banging and hammering, as if bringing on the apocalypse. A bearings replacement is supposed to tame it back to normal, so I take it apart, take sexy pics again of the wiring, kneel in the gunk oozing out of the hose, am generally content that I haven’t destroyed any parts or dropped those concrete weights on my feet, and eventually lift the drum out of the frame like the obstetrician a healthy newborn, and eventually realize that this vengeful, pathetic piece of plastic shit is welded and the only screws I will encounter will be up my sorry ass.
I will have to watch some DIY bearings replacement in welded drum porn, before deciding on my next moves…

Bearings just given out on Hoover WML520. Yet to establish if repairable. Disgusted to read that many manufacturers are thrashing the planet building greed motivated irreparable product. They need to receive high exposure for this, and shamed and rejected by responsible humans. I am making my list…………. Meanwhile, we have so called “responsible” authorities legislating on the curvature of a cucumber, the uniformity of onions, and the tangent of a tangerine. I intend bringing the built in obsolescence scam to the attention of my M.P. Suggest others do same. Hit Thrashmeister manufacturers where it hurts; in the pocket. Expose and boycott!!

Just taken the drum out of my zanussi Electrolux aquacycle, guess what ?
I’m going to buy a New machine and it won’t be Zanussi/Electrolux. Just wish more people could make their voice heard to make these manufacturers change their ways. Anyway Zanussi have lost a sale from me.

Just found out our 5 year old Hotpoint (WMUD-962) has knackered bearings and a sealed drum so it can’t be cheaply repaired.
£140 minimum for parts + TAX + labour to replace. Disgusting behavior from Hotpoint. (Machine cost £320 new).

I am now looking for a non Hotpoint replacement

So i’m not allowed a plastic straw anymore but am expected to throw away this washing machine because Hotpoint don’t want us to service it..

we have had a hotpoint WMF940 P (UK).R Aquarius+ for 7 years. now the bearings have gone – machine sounds like a jumbo jet taking off in the house! I watched several online videos and was happy this is something I can do myself. I bought a new bearing set & drum seal from Buyspares.ie (costing almost €60) for this exact machine. Striping the machine down and after noting the front panel is spot welded I took the drum out the top. no big deal……………UNTILL I WENT TO SEPERATE THE F*******G DRUM! no screws or bolts! ITS WELDED! now I have the bloody machine in bits in the garage and can’t do the bearings
    WHAT A CROCK OF SH*T
I reiterate with all other posts here, Do Not Buy A Machine With A Welded Drum

Our supposedly ‘good quality’ Bosch washing machine, a WAQ28461GB/12 has failing bearings at just six and half years of moderate use. No problem I thought, I’ll just replace them myself, or the spider at worst. Ha Ha, no… It’s one of these bloody new sealed drum pieces of junk. The last three machines we’ve bought, for our own home and two rental properties have been Bosch, and our dish-washer. I now regret giving this hateful company any of my money. It is beyond disgraceful they build machines like this. The new drum is £276!!! I can buy a new machine for that. And what is to happen to the otherwise perfectly good machine I have that really only wants a £20 bearing? Scrap… With so much focus on environmental issues now, SURELY THERE SHOULD BE A LAW AGAINST THIS???

We had the same problem with the same Bosch model, having paid over the odds for a supposedly reliable machine that could be repaired when necessary….

JLWD1612 has a welded drum. Lasted 5 years before the bearings went out.
Presumably this goes for all John Lewis washers and washer-dryers.
No one seems to have a list of machines that aren’t like this, other than saying that Miele is a safe brand – but expensive to repair nonetheless.

    Hi Guys
