LG Washing Machine Disassembly Guide

Are you looking to disassemble an LG washing machine for component replacement or to address common faults? Ever wondered what makes your LG washing machine tick?

In this comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, from removing the drum to understanding error codes.

We would also recommend you watch our 10-minute video since we're taking you on an exclusive tour inside a LG washing machine, showcasing each component and demystifying its function.

Safety First!

  • Unplug your washing machine before starting work.
  • Organize screws and parts meticulously to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Screwdrivers (various sizes) or chargeable drill with correct extensions (if you have one).
  • A friend to give you a hand while removing the motor or a hoist.

Removing the Front Panel of LG Washing Machine

Now, you will start by removing the lower front unit. Remove the flap, then the screw located behind it. On newer models, there might be additional screws behind the inspection flap.

Next, you will need to remove the door seal spring and the two screws from the door lock. And please remember that the DE error code on LG machines indicates a door interlock fault.

Now, you can easily be able to remove the top lid of the machine.

Removing the Motor

The next step is to take off the motor, stator, and gear. The LE error code corresponds to a motor issue. In older models, this could be due to a problematic hall sensor, which detects motor rotation. Whereas, in newer models, this sensor is built into the circuit board.

To remove the motor, you can use a 17 mm spanner to unlock the motor in place. Once undone, you can easily remove the bolt. The stator should be visible as the motor slides backwards.

Removing the Heating System & PCB

Disconnect the wiring to the heating element. The heating element and the NTC sensor or thermistor, which could show a TE error code if not working correctly, are now accessible for replacement or repair.

Now, you are able to remove the facial panel. Be careful as the wiring is tight, especially at the top. Once the panel is off, remove the retention bar.

Please remember, the disassembly process may vary slightly between older and newer models. Always handle the components with care to avoid any damage.

Removing the Soap Box Hose, Water Valves, Pressure Switch & Sump Hose

Next, you will remove the soap box. Lift the band on the hose to detach it. It may be more efficient for you to remove the water valve entirely, with the hoses still attached. Once this is done, the front panel can be lifted off.

Remember that an IE error code signifies a problem with the machine not filling within the allocated time. This may be due to a poor water supply, blocked filter in the back of the water valve, or an open circuit in one of the coils.

The next step is to remove the pressure switch, the pipe, and the sump hose.

The PE error code indicates an issue with the pressure switch, often related to incorrect water levels or a faulty reading sent to the circuit board. After removing the sump hose from the pump, one screw on the pressure bowl needs to be removed. This is easier to do after lifting the drum out of the machine, so tuck the pressure switch inside for now.

Removing Shock Absorbers & Lifting the Drum Out of the LG Washing Machine

Release the three pins holding the shock absorbers by pressing a pin down at the back and moving it upwards. You can cut off any clips that hold the wiring in place. There is also a screw underneath that needs removal.

With a hoist system or extra help from a friend, carefully lift the drum out of the machine. Please ensure nothing is catching and maneuver the drum out of the cabinet. Take note of the orientation of the springs when removing them from the drum.

When planning to replace the bearings and the spider on the machine, remember to remove the counterweights to change the door seal. The drum splits on this machine, unlike many new machines, making it easier to fit bearings.

Remember that, the heating element is at the back of the machine on older models and at the front on newer ones. Also, remember to remove the fill hose from the soapbox and the additional top hose.
