LG Washing Machine FE or IE Error Code | How to Replace Solenoid Water Valve 5220FR1251G or 5220FR2067J

Guide to Changing the Water Valve on LG Washing Machines

In this guide, we'll explain how to change a water valve on new type LG washing machines, and explain two error codes that could indicate a faulty water valve.

Washing machines typically have two types of valves: DC water valves in newer models and AC water valves in older ones.

In addition, the error codes FE and IE both indicate water-related issues. FE signifies overfilling, while IE indicates an inability to fill within the allocated timeframe. Although the water valve may be at fault, other issues could be responsible, as detailed in a separate video.

We would also recommend you watch our 5-minute video since we're taking you on an exclusive tour inside a LG washing machine, showcasing water valve and demystifying its function.

Additionally, you can visit our web store to buy genuine spare parts, and for this water valve, it is FCV309WNE, 5220FR1251G or 5220FR2067J: https://shop.how-to-repair.com/collections/washing-machine-parts

Safety First!

  • Unplug your washing machine before starting work.
  • Organize screws and parts meticulously to avoid confusion during reassembly.

Understanding Error Codes

The two error codes are the FE error code and the IE error code.

FE code indicates overfilling, meaning too much water is entering the machine. This could occur because a water valve is leaking when not powered up. To check for this, you can remove the soap drawer with the machine off, and ensure no water is dripping into the compartment. If it is, the water valve may be jammed open or leaking internally.

IE code, on the other hand, means the machine is unable to fill with water in the allocated time. There are multiple faults that could cause this, but essentially, it indicates that no water is entering the machine or that it's unable to fill in the time allowed.

You can learn and fix this it with our detailed video on this error code.

Water Valve Removal

To remove the water valve, first, you should remove the lid. There's one screw at the back; once undone, the valve will move sideways and then come up.

Then, you need to disconnect the wiring, and then remove two clips to take the pipes off. On new LG machines, the part number is stamped on the valve itself. However, on older machines, these are AC water valves.

Checking the Coils & Overfilling Status (FE Error Code)

Whether you have a DC or an AC water valve, each of the coils should have continuity in ohms reading, depending on the coil's size. To check this, you can use a multimeter across the coil. If it is in good condition, there will be continuity. Ensure that the filter in the back of the water valve isn't clogged, as this may restrict the flow of water and create the IE error code.

If you don't have a multimeter, you can buy one from our affiliate link to Amazon for the multimeters (we win a little commission if you use this link it always helps our website)

For the FE error code, meaning overfilling, it's different. If the valve is blocked or dirt is inside the valve, causing it to jam open, water will constantly flow into the machine. You can verify this by attaching the pipe to the water valve and turning the water on. If no water comes out, it means the valve is completely shut and functioning correctly.

Final Checks & Replacing the Valve

If your machine still isn't filling with water after checking these points, there might be an internal broken wire going through to the circuit board. You can check each wire for continuity. If there's still no water coming into the machine, it's possible that either the pressure switch or the circuit board is faulty. You can reconnect the wiring to make sure to put them on correctly.

After completing the troubleshooting steps and identifying the problem, it's time to replace the water valve.

Whether you need an AC or DC water valve, ensure you have your full part number or that the water valve fits the model you require.

Attach the necessary wiring and make sure to fit them correctly. Misaligning the wiring can cause the wrong valve compartment to fill.

Once the new valve is in place, turn on the machine and check if the error codes persist. If everything is installed correctly, the machine should now operate without any errors.
